Many people are still not aware that only 170 years ago, African-American slaves still lived, worked, and prayed in Central New Jersey. The development of slavery in New Jersey was marked by greed, conspiracy, and racial inequality. Regardless, slave men and women managed to marry, have children, and do the best they could to develop and maintain their families and community. This talk will explore the key moments in the development of slavery in New Jersey and discuss the “slaveries” that existed in the Garden State through 1804.
