A presentation with the New Jersey Muslim Heritage Month Coalition
The New Jersey Muslim Heritage Month Coalition and Dr. Mohammad Hatim explore the deep roots of Muslims in the Americas and the legacy of Black leadership. Muslims have been present since the 13th century—arriving as Gulf Coast explorers, serving as navigators on early voyages including those of Columbus, and leading expeditions into what later became Arizona and New Mexico. Following the fall of West African empires like Mali and Songhai, many were brought to the Americas as enslaved Africans, carrying rich Islamic traditions that helped shape American life. The talk will also reflect on the modern legacy of Black Muslim leaders; most notably El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X), and how his journey intersects with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the beloved community, justice, dignity, and human rights.
