Dr. Daisy Century, historical performer, will present a history of Juneteenth to the present day.
Juneteenth is described as a federal holiday celebrating the emancipation of the enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed and went into effect January 1, 1863. So, what took so long for the enslaved people to find out about this two years later? Please come to the presentation to find out what happened in those two years. There will be mention of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Watch Night, Galveston, Opal Lee, Juneteenth flag, present day celebrations throughout the United States, songs, poetry, and posters.
