This century-old, hand-colored short film was a pioneer in special effects and science fiction storytelling.
Kick off this year’s Color Your World summer reading program with a special screening of A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la Lune), considered one of the most important films ever made. Long before movies were filmed in color, some were colored by-hand, one frame at a time. Once believed lost, a color print of Georges Méliès’ 1902 masterwork was miraculously found in Barcelona over 90 years later.
This 14 minute short film will be followed by The Extraordinary Voyage, a documentary chronicling the journey of A Trip to the Moon from the fantastical Méliès' production to the astonishing rediscovery of a nitrate print in color in 1993, to the premiere of the new restoration on the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival in 2011.
