Learn the Ukrainian folk art of pysanky (pyh-sahn-KYH) making with artist Halyna Lojko & fellow members of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America
Learn the Ukrainian folk art of pysanky (pyh-sahn-KYH) making. This Ukrainian Easter tradition dates back to the ancient pagan celebration of the coming of Spring. Participants start by watching the demonstration of this wax resist (batik) process after which they are assisted in each step of the making of their own pysanka. Participants will write traditional designs with a stylus applying hot wax on the egg, and progress through a series of dye baths, adding more designs on each subsequent color. The final step- the removal of wax- reveals the jewel that is a pysanka!
Each participant will be provided all materials to work with.
Limited to 20 participants. Registration is required.
Pysanky artist, instructor Halyna Lojko, continues to teach this beloved tradition passed down to her through generations. She is assisted by fellow members of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, (UNWLA), Branch 98. Their love for the beautiful, uniquely Ukrainian folk arts is one of the missions of their central New Jersey branch. They regularly exhibit Ukrainian folk arts, teach pysanky workshops at local venues, and do many other community projects to share their heritage. This volunteer-led organization has been supporting Ukraine for nearly a century.
