Lecture and Demonstration

Spiritualism is based on the belief that the spirits of the dead are able and willing to communicate with the living. This presentation reviews the rise of this movement, starting with the Fox Sisters in upstate New York, through the appearance of charlatans who discredited the movement. Harry Houdini and other magicians helped to expose false mediums, who were deceiving the public for profit. Mac McParland will demonstrate some of the magic techniques used by these frauds.

James “Mac” McParland is a historian and a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He has been practicing magic for almost 50 years.
